Church Council has recently appointed Ms Julie Matthews as a Seniors Worker with responsibility for the Prevention of Elder Abuse to work in our congregation for the next 2 years.

This appointment has been made possible by a grant from the Regional Aged Care Board of the Uniting Church.  Our minister Rev. Dr. Douglas Purnell, the congregation, and Church Council has been keen to develop a preventative Elder Abuse program for some time - a natural outcome of Rev. Purnell's training in psychology.

There is virtually no experience in the preventative side of the Elder Abuse problem in NSW, although some work has been done in Queensland and Victoria.  We will be drawing on that experience.  The forms of abuse include physical, mental, emotional and financial.

This appointment will allow Julie Matthews to operate out of our church, looking first at St. Ives and then at the wider Ku-Ring-Gai community.
